Do I have to type the address in Japanese?

No. The tool resolves both Japanese (e.g. 北海道虻田郡倶知安町字樺山23番9) and romanized / English (e.g. 23-9 Aza Kabayama, Kutchan-cho) addresses, and even partial place names like 'Hirafu, Kutchan'.

Why does my Japanese address sometimes drop on the wrong block?

Japan uses two distinct address systems: postal (住居表示) — building-level — and cadastral (地番) — parcel-level. Listings and registry documents often quote cadastral numbers that aren't searchable on Google Maps. A residential 1丁目1番1号 ≠ a cadastral 1番地1. If the pin looks off, drag it to the correct spot — the coordinates you take from the map are what matter for diligence.

Note about addresses

A Japanese property is identified by two addressing systems - confusing them is the #1 source of misplaced pin-drops:

Postal address (住居表示): The postal, or "mailing", address of a property appears in Maps, websites, and business cards. In Japanese, it is written from general to specific (prefecture → city → district → block → building 1丁目1番1号), but either direction is OK. Use this address with this tool.
Cadastral address (地番): This is the official parcel identifier appearing in a land registry document. It is assigned by the Legal Affairs Bureau when a parcel is recorded in the registry. It often shares part of the unrelated to the postal number, but is different. Property listings and registry documents almost always quote the cadastral address.
